How to install a Dreamweaver Extension

This article explains how to use the Extension Manager to install a Dreamweaver Extension.

You should close Dreamweaver before installing any new Extension. But if you forget, no problem. After installing the Extension, simply close and reopen Dreamweaver and the Extension will be ready to go.

Extensions all have a file extension of ".mxp". So you may need to unzip the file you received. Save the "mxp" file in any location you wish, but know that Adobe supplies a "Configuration/Extensions" folder for this purpose.

Open the Extension Manager

Find Macromedia / Macromedia Extension Manager in Start/Programs on a PC, and in Finder on a Mac.

Opening the Extension Manager

You can be sure you have the latest Extension Manager for your version of Dreamweaver by visiting http://www.adobe.com/exchange/em_download/

Browse to the MXP file

In the Extension Manager, choose File/Install, then browse to the mxp file, click Install Extension... and browse to the mxp file.:

Some Mac users have discovered that his method simply does not work. Instead they find they must locate the "mxp" in Finder and double-click on the "mxp" file. This will tell the Extension Manager to install the file, bypassing the steps listed above. Afterwards you should open the Extension Manager to go to the next step.

The Description field tells you how to find the Extension

At the bottom of the Extension Manager is the Description field. You should select the newly installed Extension in the main window of the Extension Manager to view its description. Typically it will give you useful information about how to access the Extension within Dreamweaver. divaHTML Extensions are usually reached either via the Insert Bar/diva tab, as in this example for divaGPS:

Insert Bar

or the Insert/divaHTML menu:

Insert Menu

Simply click there to open the Extension's User Interface.
